Characteristics of cockroaches

Cockroaches are insects with wings that embrace their backs, varying in size depending on the specific species; their wing length can range from 2 – 3mm to 80mm, the body is light brown or black, and they rarely fly. Common types of cockroaches are American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), Australia (Periplaneta australasiae), Germany (Blattella germanica), Oriental (Blatta orientalis), yellow and brown cockroaches (Supella longipalpa).

They grow through 3 stages: eggs, nymphs, and adults. Depending on the appropriate temperature and humidity conditions, eggs can hatch into larvae after 1 to 3 months. Nymphs also called baby cockroaches, which often have no wings and are only a few millimetres long. When newly hatched, it becomes white and then turns black gradually after a few hours. Cockroach changes the shell and grows, develops into adult cockroaches for a few months to more than a year depending on the specific species; they may or may not have wings.

Cockroaches often live in the same background environment with humans and cause harm to the indoor environment in tropical, temperate, warm, humid climates and ruin their food. They live in colonies and are vigorously active at night time, while in the day time, they find a dark, damp place to hide, such as holes, wall conners, doors’ slits, cabinets, toilets, cupboards, food container, areas for radio, television and electrical equipment, drainage ditches, and animal sheds.
